Career Works High (CWH) is an exciting opportunity for students in grades 9-11 to enhance their career readiness during the 2020-2021 school year from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania (BGCWPA).
Career Works is an innovative employment and post-secondary preparation program that allows young adults to explore future career options while learning the skills they need to get on the path to success. The program runs out of our BGCWPA Career Works – Mon Valley Center in the Tube City Center for Business and Innovation (formerly the Daily News Building) at 409 Walnut St. McKeesport, PA 15132.
Career Works High, our introductory track, is designed to help youth finish high school ready to step into their career of choice. Through job shadowing, conversations with leading professionals, internships, classroom skills practice and hands-on projects, Career Works High Student Employees will learn professional skills such as communication and networking, resume building, interviewing, and financial literacy, while also earning a stipend* for participation.
After successful completion of Career Works High, youth may continue on to AIPI or Career Works Tech, accessing our built-in pathways to Apprenticeships in growing fields such as STEM, Information Technology, Robotics, and Artificial Intelligence; Culinary Arts; Transportation and Logistics; and Healthcare. CWH Students can earn credits toward their apprenticeship OR credits toward college if college is their desired post-secondary pathway.
Career Works High is a year-long after-school program running from 3-6 p.m. Monday through Friday from October 12th, 2019 to June 1, 2020 with a snack and dinner provided. There will also be a mandatory orientation during the week of October 5th for all youth and parents/guardians. In October – December 2020, Career Works Mon Valley Center will be open starting at 1:30pm for youth to use for Open Academic Work Time.
During the summer, students can also engage in employment opportunities as Student Employees and Junior Staff with an hourly wage in one of our dynamic Clubhouse locations.
Career Works High Student Employees will leave the program with a stipend*, opportunities for college or pre-apprenticeship credit, and a laptop computer upon successful graduation from the program. In addition, students get amazing work experiences and qualifications along with the skills to discuss their qualifications with potential employers, and opportunities to expand their social network with other young adults while exploring the possibilities in the Pittsburgh region.
*Stipends are based on average attendance rates as follows:
Average of 3 days per week – $800 stipend
Average of 4 days per week – $1,000 stipend
Average of 5 days per week – $1,200 stipend
***Opportunities for stipend bonuses will be announced.
No minimum GPA is required to participate.
