Prior to, throughout and beyond COVID-19, Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania has been a community leader and youth resource. As the 2020 school year approached, the mission to do “Whatever It Takes” did not stop, but rather the demand for quality, safe and affordable programs increased. New communities and families being reached by BGCWPA Before School programs, Community Learning Hubs and After School programs were in need of extra support. Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania (BGCWPA) serves over 15,000 youth annually through daytime learning hubs, before and after school programs, specialty, outreach and partnership programs. BGCWPA’s newest partnership program is with Carnegie Mellon University’s Robotics Academy on their project, P3G: Player Programmed Partner Games, to work with youth in strategizing, creating and developing a CoRobotics virtual game within the Estelle S. Campbell Clubhouse of Lawrenceville and the Carnegie Clubhouse. During our virtual Learn & Earn program this summer, part of our Career Works program, many youth got the chance to develop the power skills (a.k.a. “soft skills") necessary for working in a team, including collaboration, communication, presentation, problem solving, resilience, patience, and self-efficacy. One hands-on method for teaching these skills is through LUMA Human Centered Design methods.
