Boys & Girls Clubs of  Western Pennsylvania is committed to closing the opportunity gap in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with innovative and creative programs, such as robotics and artificial intelligence. After-school and summer learning environments provide unique opportunities to advance STEM knowledge and increase interest in STEM-related careers.

Using a cross-disciplinary approach that channels young people’s natural curiosity into the design process inherent in the arts, BGCA’s STEM programs empower youth to create new solutions to real-world challenges. This project-based approach develops critical thinking, problem-solving and other 21st-century skills critical to success in the STEM workforce and beyond.

The primary goal of the BGCWPA CS/STEM initiative has been to develop a culture of exploration, curiosity, and innovation as we build out robust programming to eventually feed our new workforce development strategy and prepare students often untapped for STEM careers with future-ready skills. Our goal is to be seen locally and even nationally as a leading out of school-time (OST) provider of STEM-focused learning and workforce development programming. We start this by building mindsets and skills with younger students and are building enrollment in our teen programming and company partnerships. We also recently had the honor of winning a PA Smart Grant from Governor Wolf’s Office to launch pioneering artificial intelligence programming for teens
